The following appeared in the Bureau of National Affairs Transportation Watch June 1
issue. Friday, June 1, 2001 The Bush administration has settled on its choice to serve as the top lawyer at the Transportation Department, with the White House saying May 31 that President Bush plans to nominate Kirk Van Tine for the post. In announcing the selection along with nine others in the new administration, the White House said Van Tine is a partner at the law firm of Baker and Botts in Washington, where he is in charge of the firm's litigation process. According to the firm, Van Tine joined Baker Botts in 1978 and became a partner in 1987. It said Van Tine has concentrated his practice in complex business litigation matters, including litigation involving the federal government. The firm said he is the head of the trial group in the Washington office and is co-chair of the litigation section of the D.C. Bar. Van Tine graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1970 and completed the Navy's postgraduate nuclear engineering program in 1971. After serving as a submarine officer until 1975, the firm said, he received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1978.
