This is kind of dated, but I received this from a business partner and friend in New Zealand. I think it says a lot about the way other friends around the world think about us....

When I visit them, they are always very concerned about the U.S. and when I ask why, they always say, because you are the leaders of the world. What happens to you and how you're doing affects all of the rest of the free world.

Regards,
Steve

Clay,Steve and all our friends in America,

Last week was such a shocking week in the history of civilization as we know it that I resisted my initial urge to write to anyone expressing anything in fear that it would be distorted by the emotion of the moment. A week later I'm still not sure just how to comment. It seems so contrite to just offer sympathy and condolences as a general statement. I think I should start by saying that as one we are all fully supportive of the American people as world leaders in democracy and freedom of the individual. The whole Western world,if not all civilization as we know it today owes a debt to the American people and their pursuit, from their very origin, for individual rights and freedom. As the leader in this it has bought a terrible responsibility and often tragic times fighting to defend that freedom. It has also bought envy and jealousy from those who know no freedom, have nothing to live for, and cannot accept anyone who does. They have not had the courage to fight in their own countries for those rights and values but instead have attempted to tear them down in a cowardly selfish way those countries that do have them.

As one we are all behind America in doing whatever has to be done to root out those responsible for the planning of last week and punishing them and in continuing the fight against terrorism by all possible means, fair or foul! I do not believe we have to get down into the gutter with the terrorists but I do believe we will not make progress in this fight against these shadowy, cowardly figures without taking ruthless, clandestine measures and the use of tactics that we all hoped we had seen the last of!

From all at Maskell's to all those that know us please accept this as a personal note of support and love for your country, your people, and for the freedom you represent.
